error uploading image parent directory not writable

The first thing you would look for is a 766 or 777 permision. But probably you will still have the problem.their are other two things you should look forchanging the “Store uploads in this folder” setting (in Settings->Miscellaneous) from “/wp-content/uploads” to “wp-content/uploads”.

the most probable chance of error is,

Is you have safe mode turned on? dont turn it off, its safer to be on.
Apache runs as user ‘apache’, so that the directory created by php scripts belong to the user apache. If you have enabled php safemode, php scripts will not allow the owner of the root folder to write anything in the files belonging to another user (in this case – apache). What would solve the problem is to set the root of your blog to the user apache

 [Root @ user www] # chown-R apache: html *

where html is the root folder of your blog
This should solve the problem

Artificial Brain in 10 years

Posted: 13th October 2009 by Linoy Joseph in Artificial Intelligence, General, Research Interest

Its been 50 years trying to break the code of intelligence, its still a puzzle how we do things we do. Many of the artificial projects failed because of the obstacles faced when it comes to the reality of implementation.

Blue brain project was one of the initiative by SWISS govt in association with Brain and Mind Institute in 2005.

At the TED Global conference, Henry Markram, director of the Blue Brain Project, revealed that he and his team in Switzerland are aiming to build a functioning, artificial human brain within the next 10 years.

The team started out a few years ago by attempting to create a fully functioning artificial rat brain using the IBM supercomputer, Blue Gene. The thought was if they could successfully replicate a rat’s brain, they would then leverage their knowledge to do the same with a human one.

When they began their experiment, the digital rat brain only fired neurons when prodded by a simulated electrical current. Recently, however, the neurons have begun spontaneously organizing themselves into a more complex pattern.

According to the scientists, this is the beginning of the self-organizing neurological patterns that eventually, in more complex mammal brains, become personality.

Markram thinks that in 10 years, they’ll either have an artificial human brain that has consciousness or they’ll know that consciousness is more than just a neurological pattern. If they do succeed, Markram says they’ll bring the brain to TED to speak.

I belive the world is ready with enough solutions to start building a human brain. This doesnt mean people are trying to compet god or the robots are going to rule people like in the terminator. Its like a new era of problem solving and supporting human kind. Like camera playing a major role instead of human eyes.

  • ohh man, discovery channel in india is now in hindi… transulation simply sucks, years of my favorite channel is now my worst channel #

I just noticed a blog which reveals the screenshots of google chromeos

The blog is new, the blogger does not reveal his name. He says he is from acer and he took the pictures while google flocks where presenting the OS to the acer flocks for their upcoming chrome os laptops.

But the images looks fake, it seems like its a regular desktop, the person forgot to draw the mouse pointer, also do acer floks use tables like kitchen tables with tiles on it :D

he said the extremely stripeddown os took a booting time of 25sec, it shldnt take that much…

he also said soon after the google and acer people stepped out he took the pics secretly and published it here… its easy to find the last person from the room… most of these doubts are from those blog comments itself…

the images was from the blog http://chromeosleak.wordpress.com/2009/07/09/the-first-pics-of-the-chrome-os-beta-for-devs/

  • google launching operating system called chrome os, might be a os with browser as the desktop… the concept of webos #

google-chrome-osIt was my dream to built WebOs in my angelsvista project 3 years back. Had a great team with passion, but due to some resons we couldnt do it and had to cut down to practicle pieces of projects according to our strength, time and money.

Anyone knows Google had plans of a Operating System as soon as google apps was launched. This is about what Google Chrome Operating System is and what probably they are going to do. Atleast if it was me…

What actualy is a Operating System?

People used to ask me, why do we need a WebOs in a browser. Operating system (abbreviated as OS) is the the software component that is responsible for the sharing of the resources of the computer. The OS acts as a host for applications running on the machine

Then what is a WebOs?

The WebOs is not just another emulation of the desktop into a browser. Its all about mobility of our desktop, seamless integration with the web, availability and sharing.

The desktop and applications available from anywhere we have the necessary smartclient installed (here chrome browser, with all necessary features of multi process, v8 etc) over a operating system installed that not necessarily have a Visible desktop.

The desktop can be a non closable browser on full screen at the background. The desktop can have shortcuts to all necessary applications which can be choosen by the user. It can be from google, other providers or contributed by the public. These applications are available offline (as we have it now) and only parts of the code will be reloaded or updated automaticaly whenever a new version is available (by last file update time) while application loading(if internet available). Synchronizes with the internet when ever connected to the net like updating a changed file or sending a mail that was clicked sent while offline. All these are existing technologies brought togather into one platform.

Simply speaking WebOs is something nearly same to our current Desktop in user point of view but more closer with the web and have more flexibility also accessible from anywhere in the internet. Maybe other than webos it should be called Desktop 2.0

In technical point of view the desktop or the gui is replaced by a browser limited to its ui with offline facility.

Web os is not limited to the services of google like youtube etc, but these can be integrated if u share a video.

What about different types of files?

Commonly and mostly used files are documents, spreadsheets, presentations, text, audio, video… their are more but most of the rest are related with specific applications or those related with the given files itself (like zip for compression etc, which are all developed with old requirements of saving space). So it doesnt matter much in todays environment. These are the files google has already worked over in google apps and its other services.

The storage space is growing at a rate of 200% at the same cost every 18months and bandwidth every 3 years. So its something near to unlimited for a regulated common use, which might be the aim of the secret LIGHT HOUSE project of google.

Application Flexibility?

Any kind of application similar to the system application can be developed, even a game or a cpu intensive simulation can be done. (native client plugin is a google initiative for this)

Internet Availability and bandwidth choking?

The browser cache does not reload the application once loaded, its same as the offline applications of google. Even if its a huge application, their is no necessity to reload everything every time we have internet as only the updated file need to me reloaded. Even gmail is a split collection of dozens of javascript files so only the one updated need to be reloaded.

It works even if no internet is available for long time. And requires just the same internet we have now, but better the best.

Will Google Chrome Os replace regular operating systems?

It can… but for a timebeing Google os or the webos would replace netbooks and mobiles (in the application UI layer).

As only the basic applications are available and the Hardware-Web gap is not completely removed, but further growth of application like Gears and Native clients can replace these operating system by regular operating system. Regular operating system in the sense, the current working structure of the operating system, that does not mean its the death of Microsoft or so.

What all features can we expect?

Synchronization of the files on filesystem.

Syncing with the mobile.

All the peripherals would be accessible by the applications, if permitted (cam, mic, speakers etc)

Aggregating of several communication provider such as mail, im, social networks, for example other than gmail a aggregated mail application that aggregates mail from different service provider or a aggregated social networking with a single contact list in the system.

Location Based Services with api from mobile operators worldwide (almost done by google)

Single point of contact (openid, google voice)

Automatic application updation (feature of webapps)

… i am missing a lot… :)

What about cloud?

Cloud has to do a lot on this… all these applications are static applications rendered on the client, but the files are stored in the cloud and the data are generated from the cloud. In processor intensive applications beyond ur systems performance, maybe for a particular simulation in your college project u can use the cloud api to run it on ur system (actualy on the web) for enormous power.

All these doesnt mean its just a Linux with bolted Chrome browser for google chrome operating system, they are working over the linux kernel to make it better and faster… lets expect a surprise

Strategy

Despite of all this, in googles point, theyl pressure over their service for maximum monopoly, but their tactic is…. open source all client side applications, share api’s for their informations but always keep monopoly in the information they have and its interpretation. Try to create a monopoly in all daily use products atleast as a platform for others releasing api’s (search, maps, apps). Also especialy peoples point of contact (google id, google voice)

In simple, Conqure peoples daily use space with a goal that u cannot simply live without google… who ever comes with a new product should go through googles platform.

Review: Reliance Net Connect, My biggest mistake

Posted: 6th July 2009 by Linoy Joseph in Reviews

reliance_netconnectThis is my first review i am publishing on this site. I have been using reliance netconnect for about 2 months. My overall impression was very negative. It made sure that i suffer. A wireless internet connection for my laptop which has roaming capability all through india was my requirment.

After a basic search, the options i had was TATA Plug2Surf, Reliance Netconnect, Reliance Broadband plus, Airtel Mobile office and Idea Netsetter.

My first try was Airtel Mobile office, the service and bad, i could get only about 1-2 kbps speed on average.

Second was Tata Plug2Surf. From several articles online and my past experience with other products i came to know tata has several billing problems and their service is too bad.

I got hold of a Reliance Netconnect as broadband plus unlimited cost Rs. 1750.

Netconnect Device cost: Asked 2800, i bargained for rs 2600

Plan: 20gb for RS. 827 including tax (dont think u can use 1/2 of it)

Installation: Easy

Service Circle: Kerala

Presale service: awesome

I came home with the device, started using, these are my statistics

Average Download speed: download: 2-4 kp upload: 1-2 kb (my dialup gave similar speed)

The thing was too slow for basic browsing. In simple words, Gmail wont work (using html version). Several refreshes sometimes can load orkut

After few days i got a rs 300 bill, fine, afterall i have no other option, the device has no buyback offer.

I got another call from reliance and asked me “is rs 1200 credit limit fine for you” i confirmed with my address etc.

After some days on a fine morning i was preparing for a demo Product presentation to a important person, while trying to connect, it just wont connect and i got a sms “Your bill is generated, please pay to continue service” i have 15 days for the last payment date, but i cant connect, i contacted customer care quickly, they say u have to pay the bill to continue. I told my bill is just generated i didnt even receive bill on post, please enable it. Simple reply: Please contact your nearest web world. When i asked for the reson, they said “your rental is 827 but you have credit limit of 500 only”. As my meeting was at a coffeshop and no wifi was available, we had to postpond the demo.

Later i contacted Reliance customer care, i said i have paid the last bill correctly, i just need the service you have promised, i didnt even make a single call or sms of this device, i was told i had 1200 credit, could you please increase the credit limit equal to rental so i  will get the service for what i am paying for “We are providing you service for what you are paying for” i didnt like the tone of that lady, my last question was “So i will get a disconnection like this on every bill generation. They said yes, i asked for any solution . They asked me for a deposit to just increase the credit limit equal to rental. For every question of mine they have only one answer “Please contact your nearest webworld

Webworld was about 15kms away, i got over their and asked for it, they made some entries and collected my bill amount and activated the service.

The bill says i used 5gb transfer, i dont know how… i tried to download  a 1gb database in one weeks time, other than that just browsing. Video, audio wont work, even gmail orkut wont work. Nothing works to use 5gb.

You pay rs. 827 but the service you get wont even compete with your BSNL 250 plan, including everything.

You cant browse more than 2pages at a time, if u have a download at background, you cant browse so dont think of it…

Yes it is fast upto 8kb after 2am in the morning. Also dont think you can put a active download at night and go to sleep as u cant do at morning, it gets disconnected after some download.

Bsnl evdo was faster than this, i borrowed it once from my friend for a presentation at st.teresas college cochin

and bsnl just cost some 400 rs rent too… i heard he never got bill, and he never paid for past 6months and never got disconnected too… the only reason i didnt look at it was it didnt had roaming facility, but i belive Bsnl started roaming for EVDO now

I want to change Reliance Netconnect to something else before next disconnection and running behind that.

I am ready to sell, do anyone want it :)

Healthcare Industry in India

HealthcareSector structure/Market size

Healthcare, which is a US$ 35 billion industry in India, is expected to reach over US$ 75 billion by 2012 and US$ 150 billion by 2017, according to Technopak Advisors in their report – ‘India Healthcare Trends 2008’.

The sector offers immense potential to healthcare players as the country witnesses a rise in the incidence of lifestyle-related and other diseases. A growing elderly population and rise in income levels are also pushing for better facilities in the country.

To meet this growing demand, the country needs US$ 50 billion annually for the next 20 years, says a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) study. India needs to add 3.1 million beds by 2018 to the existing 1.1 million, and requires immediate investments of US$ 82 billion, as per the Technopak Advisors report.

Health Insurance

Currently only 10 per cent of the Indian population has health insurance, which means that there is tremendous scope for growth in this area. The Indian health insurance business is growing at 50 per cent. The sector is projected to grow to US$ 5.75 billion by 2010, according to a study by the New Delhi-based PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Investments in Healthcare

The sector has been attracting huge investments from domestic players as well as financial investors and private equity (PE) firms. Funds such as ICICI Ventures, IFC, Ashmore and Apax Partners invested about US$ 450 million in the first six months of 2008-09 compared with US$ 125 million in the same period a year ago, according to an analysis carried out by Feedback Ventures. Feedback Ventures expects PE funds to invest at least US$ 1 billion in the healthcare sector in the next five years.

Religare Venture Capital has entered into a 50:50 joint venture with PE player Milestone Capital to manage a US$ 120.09 million PE fund and tap the huge potential in healthcare and education sectors.

GE Healthcare has invested US$ 50 million in its Bangalore facility and will be investing an additional US$ 25 million soon.

Philips plans to make India one of its global production hubs for medical equipment by investing substantially on upgrading of its two acquired manufacturing facilities in the country and increasing their capacity.

The government, along with participation from the private sector, is planning to invest US$ 1 billion to US$ 2 billion in an effort to make India one of the top five global pharmaceutical innovation hubs by 2020.

Medical Tourism

In 2007 India treated 450,000 foreign patients ranking it second in medical tourism.

According to a study by McKinsey and the CII, medical tourism in India could become a US$ 2 billion industry by 2012 (from US$ 350 million in 2006). Credit Suisse estimates medical tourism to be growing at between 25-30 per cent annually.

The key selling points of the medical tourism industry are its cost effectiveness and its combination with the attractions of tourism. Treatment cost is lowest in India—20 per cent of the average cost incurred in the US, Singapore, Thailand and South Africa.

Besides world class medical facilities, India is also trying to promote its traditional medicine such as ayurveda.

Areas of Opportunity

The fast growth in the Indian healthcare sector has created various pockets of opportunities for investors. A recent FICCI-Ernst and Young (E&Y) report highlights several such areas within the healthcare sector.

  • Medical infrastructure forms the largest portion of the healthcare pie. Beds in excess of 1 million need to be added to reach a ratio of 1.85 per thousand at an investment of US$ 77.9 billion.
  • The medical equipment industry is around US$ 2.17 billion and is growing at 15 per cent per year. It is estimated to reach US$ 4.97 billion by 2012.
  • The medical textiles industry is projected to double to reach US$ 753 million by 2012.
  • Clinical trials have the potential to become a US$ 1 billion industry by 2010 and the health services outsourcing sector has the potential to grow to US$ 7.4 billion by 2012, from US$ 3.7 billion in 2006.

Government Initiative

The Governemnt launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005. It aims to provide quality healthcare for all and increase the expenditure on healthcare from 0.9 per cent of GDP to 2-3 per cent of GDP by 2012.

During the 2009 interim budget, the government has allocated US$ 2.42 billion for NRHM.
